Ladies and gentleman, the FIFA world cup has finally begun. There are 6 groups, 32 teams and 64 matches lined up for the month of June. It will be hectic trying to catch all the matches but we are sure it will be worth it. Tears of joy and sorrow will be shed during this time as some teams will progress to the finals and others bid the World Cup adieu.

History…

Looking back at the World Cup history, 8 of the 12 teams that have ever made it to the finals are present at the 2018 tournament. Those teams are Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, England, France and Spain. Teams that did not qualify this time around are Italy, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and the Netherlands.

Groups

The past winners of the world cup have been spread evenly among the 6 groups. This adds some excitement to the games and makes them a bit less predictable. In group A and D are Uruguay and Argentina who have won the world cup twice each. Groups B, C and G have Spain, France and England respectively. These teams have only ever claimed the title once each. Group F has Germany which has won the championship 4 times. Brazil, in group E and has won the trophy 5 times.

Looking at the past winners of the World Cup, it seems like history does repeat itself every now and again. The problem would be predicting how this happens. Life without the Internet

History states that the internet was introduced in the 1960’s with the development of the ARPANET Project directed by Robert Taylor and managed by Lawrence Roberts. There have been several developments to what we know as the internet today. The internet brought a lot of change in the world. Trying to imagine a life without it seems impossible.

Communication

Communication without the internet would be interesting. People would go back to letter writing and wait eagerly for the reply. The landlines would still be functional as well as all those telephone booths in the streets. There would be no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp or any social media platform. There would be cell phones but not smartphones. To tell someone about your great holiday or that amazing date, you would have to meet up in person.

School and Research

Without the internet, people would actually have to meet for group work and projects. The library would be the place to be if one wanted to pass at school. Since there would be no Google Scholar or any Wikipedia articles to copy and paste from.
The most interesting part of all this is that students at tertiary level would have to revert to handing in 4 paged assignments and not emailing them. I pity the lectures and professors’ who would have to bear with reading all those hard copies.

Games

No internet means no cool games. This translates to no online casino games. The world as we know it would be a very different place.  It would be like going back to the dark ages all over again.
